An exploration of degree apprentice perspectives: a Q methodology study

Degree apprenticeships in the UK represent a shift approach to degree-level study. As model matures, it is important hear perspectives of apprentices. Using Q methodology, study aims identify different apprentices’ viewpoints apprenticeship, exploring aspects belonging, support, challenges and views learning experience. Thirty-five second-year computing apprentices at university participated Centroid factor analysis revealed three perspectives: aligned student-workers, busy professionals, cast adrift. Aligned student-workers were balancing work effectively, finding value both. Busy professionals already consolidated as using this degree apprenticeship upskill. Finally, adrift, reported lack support workplace that was affecting their view on apprenticeship. This exploratory study, resulting new research instrument approach, contributes practice, models expand beyond.
